What does the meaning of "vitamin?"

Vitamins are organic compounds naturally found in food. Vitamins are necessary for us to absorb nutrients in the foods we consume. Vitamins cannot be made by the body; they must be taken from food.

There are two types of vitamins: water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. The liver and fatty tissues are home to fat-soluble vitamins. Examples include vitamin D, E, K, A, and beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified according to their biological activity. There are eight major types of vitamins:

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C - important for proper nerve function and energy production.
  • D - Vital for healthy bones and teeth
  • E is needed for good reproduction and vision.
  • K - Essential for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P – vital for building strong bones.
  • Q - aids digestion, absorption and absorption iron
  • R - Required for red blood cell production

The recommended daily allowance of vitamins (RDA), varies according to age, gender, physical condition, and other factors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sets RDA values.

Women who are pregnant or lactating need more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 micrograms per day when breast milk is being produced.
